How a guest gets there
The guest taps a “WiFi” alert in the app which opens a dedicated WiFi connect screen in the app.
The two connect options
- Automatic connect: A button attempts to join the network directly. On newer phones, Android briefly shows its own system pop-up asking the guest to confirm joining the network — this is normal and expected, not an app error.
- QR code / copy password: Same idea as iOS — a QR code for scanning with another device, plus a “copy password” option so the guest can paste it manually into WiFi settings if needed.
The screen also includes shortcut links straight into the phone’s WiFi settings and the app’s own permission settings, to make it easier for the guest (or a staff member helping them) to sort out issues without hunting through menus.
Android-specific gotcha: permissions
Newer Android phones (Android 13 and above) require the guest to have granted a “Nearby devices” permission before the app is allowed to join a WiFi network on their behalf. If this permission has been denied:
- The automatic connect button may fail silently or show an error.
- The fix is to point the guest to the app’s permission settings (there’s a shortcut link on the WiFi screen) and enable “Nearby devices,” then try again.
On older Android phones (Android 9 and earlier), the app uses an older, simpler method to join the network, so this permission issue doesn’t apply — expect the button to work more reliably on very old handsets, but with a slightly clunkier connection process behind the scenes.
