How Personalisation Preferences Are Built Up Over Time

Setting up preferences during onboarding is just the starting point. The app continues to refine its understanding of what a guest enjoys, based on how they actually use it.

Each preference tag has a weight — a number representing how strongly the app associates that interest with the guest. When a guest first selects a tag during onboarding, it starts at a weight of 10. From there it moves up or down based on specific interactions:

ActionEffect on weight
Viewing a piece of content+1
Liking something+5
Disliking something-5
Favouriting something+10
Removing a favourite-10
Removing a like-5
Removing a dislike+5

These changes apply to every tag on the content item — so if a guest favourites a walking route that’s tagged with both “walking” and “outdoor activities”, both of those tags gain +10.

Actions are also reversible. If a guest likes something and then removes the like, the tags lose the 5 points they gained. The same applies to dislikes and favourites — toggling off an action undoes its effect on the weights.

Info

If a guest explicitly dislikes a piece of content, it won’t reappear in their recommendations regardless of what the tag weights say. The dislike is tracked separately at the item level, not just through the weight change.
