Entity-by-Entity Examples: Spotlight, Siri & Shortcuts

The rest of this chapter explains each access route on its own — Spotlight, Siri, and App Shortcuts. This article walks through all three, one content type at a time, so it’s easy to see exactly what a guest on iOS 27 would type, say, or tap for each one.

    FAQs

    Step 1 of 3

    Spotlight

Guest swipes down on the home screen and types “pool opening times”. The matching FAQ appears in the results. Tapping it opens the answer in the app.

    Step 2 of 3

    Siri

Content: Guest says “I have a question for [app name]”. Siri asks “What would you like to know?” — guest answers “pool opening times” — if only one FAQ matches, Siri says “Opening…” and takes the guest straight to it; if two to four match, Siri asks which one they meant; otherwise the matches are listed on screen. A factual question about one place, such as “is the pool open”, is answered directly — see Asking Siri a Question.Asking Siri a Question

    Step 3 of 3

    Shortcuts app

Guest opens the Shortcuts app, taps “Search FAQ”, and Siri asks what they’re looking for — same flow as before, just started from a tap instead of a spoken phrase.

    Step 1 of 3

    Events

    Step 1 of 4

    Spotlight

Guest types “live music” — any matching event appears in results, with its date and time shown. Tapping it opens the event in the app.

    Step 2 of 4

    Siri (searching by name)

Guest says “What’s on at [app name]”. Siri asks “What are you looking for?” — guest answers “live music” — one match opens straight away, two to four are read out to choose from, and more are listed on screen.

    Step 3 of 4

Siri (browsing by time, no keyword needed)

Guest says “What’s on this weekend at [app name]” — Siri shows a selection of events happening that weekend straight away, with no follow-up question. See Siri: Browsing Without Searching.

    Step 4 of 4

    Shortcuts app

Guest opens the Shortcuts app and taps “What’s On” — same as the search flow above, started from a tap.

    Step 1 of 4

    Places

    Step 1 of 5

    Spotlight

Guest types “swimming pool” — the matching place appears, and if it has a phone number and location set, native Call and Directions buttons can appear right on the result (see Spotlight Search).

    Step 2 of 5

    Siri (searching by name)

Guest says “I’m looking for a place at [app name]”. Siri asks what they’re looking for — guest answers “swimming pool” — a single matching place opens in the app; if there are a few, Siri asks which one.

    Step 3 of 5

    Siri (searching by category)

Content: Guest answers the same prompt with “attractions” instead of a specific name — Siri finds places in the “Attractions” category without needing an exact name.

    Step 4 of 5

    Siri (asking a question)

Guest says “I’m looking for a place at [app name]”, then answers with a question such as “what time does the sports bar open” — Siri reads out the opening times from the place’s page. See Asking Siri a Question.

    Step 5 of 5

    Shortcuts app

Guest opens the Shortcuts app and taps “Search Places” — prompts for a term the same way as the spoken version.

    Step 1 of 5

    Offers

    Step 1 of 3

    Spotlight

Guest types “half price” — any matching offer appears, showing its “OFFER” badge.

    Step 2 of 3

    Siri

Guest says “I’m looking for an offer at [app name]”. Siri asks what they’re looking for — guest answers “half price” — Siri shows matching offers.

    Step 3 of 3

    Shortcuts app

Guest opens the Shortcuts app and taps “Search Offers” — same prompt-and-answer flow, started from a tap.

    Step 1 of 3

    Routes

    Step 1 of 3

    Spotlight

Guest types “coastal walk” — any matching route appears, showing its difficulty badge and length.

    Step 2 of 3

    Siri

Guest says “I’m looking for a route at [app name]”. Siri asks what they’re looking for — guest answers “coastal walk”, or something like “easy cycling” to search by difficulty and activity together — Siri shows matching routes.

    Step 3 of 3

    Shortcuts app

Guest opens the Shortcuts app and taps “Search Routes” — same flow, started from a tap.

    Step 1 of 3

    Home Sales

    Step 1 of 3

    Spotlight

Guest types “3 bedroom” — any matching home for sale appears, showing its price.

    Step 2 of 3

    Siri

Guest says “I’m looking for a home at [app name]”. Siri asks what they’re looking for — guest answers “3 bedroom”, or a category like “lodges” — Siri shows matching homes.

    Step 3 of 3

    Shortcuts app

Guest opens the Shortcuts app and taps “Search Holiday Homes” — same flow, started from a tap.

    Step 1 of 3

    Welcome Pack

    Step 1 of 3

    Spotlight

Guest types “wifi password” — the matching welcome pack item appears in results, with a Call button if the item has a phone number set.

    Step 2 of 3

    Siri

Content: Guest types “wifi password” — the matching welcome pack item appears in results, with a Call button if the item has a phone number set.

    Step 3 of 3

    Shortcuts app

Guest opens the Shortcuts app and taps “Search Welcome Pack” — same flow, started from a tap.

    Step 1 of 3

    Booking

    Step 1 of 3

    Spotlight

Guest types their booking reference number, e.g. “HM123456” — their booking appears (this is the only thing a booking is searchable by; see Spotlight Search). Tapping it opens the booking directly.

    Step 2 of 3

    Siri

Guest says “Show my booking on [app name]” — no follow-up question needed, since a signed-in guest only has one current booking. Siri reads back a spoken summary and shows a card with the details. See Bookings in Siri.

    Step 3 of 3

    Shortcuts app

Guest opens the Shortcuts app and taps “Show My Booking” — same result as saying the phrase.

    Step 1 of 3

    Searching everything at once

None of the above needs the guest to know which content type they’re after — saying “Search [app name] for…” and finishing the sentence searches all seven at once, opening the app straight onto a Search screen with matching results from every type already listed. See Siri Global Search for how that works.
